culture at Chichen Itza and Uxmal, get fresh at the Cenotes. Have some city
life in elegant Merida and check out the history of Campeche. Taste the Yucatecan
food, rich in flavors and delicious dishes. There will be time for swimming,
snorkeling or diving in the turquoise waters of Isla Mujeres. Get to know Mayan
culture , enjoy it, respect it and take care of it. Feel an atmosphere that
is conducive to mutual learning and personal growth. Welcome to the Maya Paths
Tour.
Day 1: CANCUN
Overnight Hotel Soberanis or similar (based on availability at time of booking)
Enjoy the day exploring Cancun on your own. Orientation briefing at the Hotel.
Day 2: CANCUN/CHICHEN ITZA/MERIDA
After breakfast, we depart towards Chichen Itza for a guided tour in one of
the 5 most significant archaeological sites in the Maya World. This enormous
complex of Mayan ruins is one of the largest and best maintained in Mexico.
After the guided tour you'll have plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
Climb one of the best preserved and rebuilt pyramids of the Mayan World, the
famous El Castillo, and see the sacred cenote where the ancient Maya made sacrifices
to their gods. Buffet Lunch at Hacienda Xaybeh . Get ready for a refreshing
swim at Cenote Ik Kil, a perfectly round well-type cenote with exuberant vegetation
and waterfalls. We continue to Merida. Free time to explore the “White
city”. Walk along the Paseo de Montejo and visit the Main Plaza. Lodging.
Day 3: MERIDA/CELESTUN NATIONAL PARK/MERIDA
Breakfast. Then we visit Celestun, a Special Biosphere Reserve. It’ s
tranquil estuary 22.5 km (14 mi) long and one mile wide, running parallel to
the sea, is a natural rustic paradise for animals and birds. It attracts many
migrating winged winter visitors and is the home to some 500 species of resident
water birds, mammals, reptiles and tropical fish. We take a small motorcraft
to see one of the largest flamingo colonies in the Americas. Box Lunch. Then
visit the beautiful beaches, the mangrove trees and the petrified forest. Dinner.Overnight
in Merida.
Day 4: MERIDA/ MAYAN COMMUNITIES ACANCEH/MAYAPAN/MANI/MERIDA
Alter breakfast, we start the Convent Route. Acanceh will be our first stop.
This site is unique in its integration of the modern town and the remains of
its ancient past. Next to the pyramid, we will find a grocery store, a bakery,
several lots and even an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting place. We continue to
Mayapan, the most important center of the Maya civilization before the arrival
of the Spanish. The city of Mayapan is a walled city covering about four square
kilometers centering on one central plaza in which the main buildings are located.
You will see the ruins of a large tiered pyramid and other structures reminiscent
of Chichen Itza, although the quality of construction and decoration here is
much lower. We continue to Tekit, a large prosperous looking village. There
you will find the parish of “ San Antonio de Padua”, with a large
temple that house many ornate statues of saints in their individual niches.Box
Lunch. Our next village is Mama, its temple and ex convent are living reminders
of the great labor of the Franciscans. Our final and most important stop on
the Route will be Mani . This is the infamous site where Bishop Friar Diego
de Landa burned valuable Mayan codices and transcripts. The temple of the Convent
of St. Micheal the archangel still conserves this tragic past. Box Lunch. We
return to Merida. Rest of the day at leisure. Dinner.
Day 5: MERIDA/EK BALAM/CENOTE DZITNUP/VALLADOLID
Breakfast. We depart to Ek Balam , the “Black Jaguar”. The grand
size of this site gives you exceptional examples of what the Mayans were capable
of. Ek Balam is one of the latest finds, only recently opened to the public
and not yet discovered by tour buses. With its well-preserved majestic palace
and grounds, Ek Balam seems untouched by time. Time for a refreshing swim at
Cenote Dzitnup. Cenotes were very important to the ancient Mayas as there are
no aboveground rivers in the Yucatán peninsula, and this was the primary
way to access fresh water for drinking. Dzitnup is in a cave, with a small natural
"skylight" where the cave ceiling had broken through to the sunny
natural light above. This cenote is clear turquoise water and very quiet, peaceful
and spiritual. You can swim in it but it is also interesting to soak up the
surroundings. We continue to the charming colonial city of Valladolid. Experience
the best in traditional Yucatecan dishes. Take time out to shop in the plaza
where authentic Mayan goods are sold. Overnight .
Day 6: VALLADOLID/BALANKANCHE CAVES/PLAYA DEL CARMEN
Breakfast. This morning we continue to the Balankanche Caves which were used
by the Maya to make ceremonial offerings to the rain god. The highlight of the
cave tour is a huge cavern with an enormous stalagmite in the middle, like a
pillar reaching to the ceiling. The trail through the cave is wide, but be prepared
for warm temperatures. Then we journey to the Maya Riviera coast. Experience
Playa del Carmen “ The Yucatan’s well-kept secret” Walk on
the Fifth Avenue , watch the street performers playing guitars while singing
Spanish folk songs, enjoy a Happy Hour at a local tavern. Get relaxed in a peaceful
atmosphere. Overnight.
Day 7: PLAYA DEL CARMEN/TULUM/AKUMAL/ISLA MUJERES
After breakfast, we start our journey to the Mayan Riviera. Our first stop is
Tulum, a particularly impressive site, perched as it is high on top of limestone
cliffs that spill down to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean below. Your
first time in the “ walled city” will take your breath away. Tulum
is not a particularly important city to archeologists but what Tulum lacks in
architectural style it more than makes up for in location. We continue to Akumal,
the first resort on the Riviera Maya. Even though it has grown considerably
since it’s beginnings in the 1950’s as an exclusive resort for scuba
divers, it still maintains an unhurried, relaxed atmosphere. Our next stop will
be Isla Mujeres, “The Island of Women”, a fishing village only 5
miles long and half a mile wide with a downtown area of just four by six blocks.
Though it is now discovered by tourists, it still retains it's charm and tranquil
atmosphere. Stroll the streets , see families gathered together in Caribbean
styled homes, tucked between stores and restaurants, mending their fishing nets
and relaxing. Overnight.
Day 8: ISLA MUJERES/CANCUN
After breakfast, enjoy your free time. Rent a golf cart or a bike to get to
know the island, get a tan and exercise at the same time. Climb up the Lighthouse
and see the Mayan Ruins at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres. Visit the Cultural
Center in town and relax on the palm fringed beaches of Playa Norte (North Beach).
Scuba diving and snorkeling are some of the favorite things you can do there.

Communities, be in contact with local people, learn about their traditions and
enjoy the cultural diversity. Here the past is ever present, mingling with the
modern. Mexico is a country privileged by its astonishing ecological diversity.

the responsible travel to natural areas. Explore and enjoy the natural world,
but in a way that is minimally intrusive. We invite you to stop for a while

Day 1: CANCUN
Overnight Hotel Soberanis or similar ( based on availability at time of booking)
Enjoy the day exploring Cancun on your own. Orientation briefing at the Hotel.Allow
yourself an hour or two to just relax in a sidewalk cafe, taking in the new
sights, sounds and smells. If jet lag is a challenge, have an early dinner and
a good long sleep to prepare you for a full next day.
Day 2: CANCUN/CHAN SANTA CRUZ (CARRILLO PUERTO)
After breakfast, early in the morning, we head south to visit some Mayan communities
which were involved in the history of independence of the Maya State. Tihosuco,
home to the excellent Museum of the Caste War. Located in a restored colonial
mansion, the museum details the history of that devastating conflict with fascinating
displays of pictures and artifacts from the period. The Caste War was one of
the most successful indigenous uprisings in the history of the Americas and
led to the existence of an independent Maya state that remained autonomous for
over 50 years. Then we visit the small village of Tixcacal Guardia in which
we will see “the speaking crosses”. The last stop of the day will
be the sleepy town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. It has the most incredible history
of any town in Mexico. It used to be called Chan Santa Cruz and was founded
by the rebel Maya following Yucatan's Caste War (1847-1850), and until 1900
it was the capital of the only Native American state ever to become successfully
established since the Spanish conquest of the Americas. We visit the "grotto
of the Speaking Crosses” and its Sanctuary. You will notice in Carrillo
Puerto a strong cultural ambiance. As this city is not a major tourist destination,
you can go a full day here without seeing another tourist. Free evening for
a nice walking or just relax at the Hotel. Overnight.
Day 3: CHAN SANTA CRUZ/ THE VALLEY OF THE MASKS/ BECAN/CHICANNA
Breakfast. We spend our day exploring some Mayan sites recently rescued from
the forest. The enormous pyramid in Kinich Na is too massive to be captured
by camera up close and can be seen from many miles away. Let’s have a
view from the top. Dzibanché is one of the most recently restored ruins
of Mexico and is well worth a visit. Completely surrounded by the lush foliage
of the tropical jungle, these ruins have a mystical quality that is enhanced
by a lack of tourists. For that reason they are frequented by all manner of
tropical wildlife and exotic birds. Becan, an ancient city surrounded by a ditch
which is unique in the Mayan area. We will see remains of a wall, in some places
almost 11 feet high. Becan is characterized by monumental structures grouped
around grand plazas. Our last stop will be Chicanna: “House of the Mouth
of Snakes” . Our peaceful Ecovillage Resort deep in the jungle will be
waiting for us. Time to relax at the Hotel lounge or the pool, enjoy a drink
while listening the crickets or the singing of birds. Dinner.
Day 4: CHICANNA/ CALAKMUL BIOSPHERE RESERVE/CHETUMAL
Early breakfast. We depart for Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the second largest
protected area in Mexico. We will see a rich number of ecosystems, mainly jungle,
small plains and forest. A wide variety of fauna species in danger of extinction
live in the Biosphere: jaguars, ocelots, tigers, monkeys, deer, wild hogs, eagles,
and others. Its flora richness include trees of fine wood with branches up to
30 meters long such as: chicozapote, oak, and ceiba (Mayan sacred tree). The
Reserve also holds the highest concentration of archeological ruins of the Mayan
world. Over 6,500 structures have been discovered. There will also be many opportunities
for birders and natural history buffs to observe the enormous variety of avi-fauna.
Box lunch. We continue to Chetumal, capital of Quintana Roo State. Situated
in the Bay of Chetumal on the southern end of the state and borders with Belize.
It’s importance has flourished around its free trade zone. Its tranquil
streets are lined by colorful wooden houses built in a traditional English colonial
style .We suggest a stroll at dusk on the pleasant boardwalk. Taste some regional
dishes. Overnight.
Day 5: CHETUMAL/MUSEUM OF MAYAN CULTURE /BACALAR LAGOON/SIAN KAAN
After breakfast, we will have a guided sightseeing of the city. Then we visit
the interactive Museum of Mayan Culture. Interesting displays will help us to
increase our knowledge of Mayan history, religious beliefs and customs. Then
we continue north to Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the "Lagoon of Seven
Colors", due to its turquoise and aquamarine hues. Fishing, sailing and
birdwatching are popular activities. Time to explore the area. Later we visit
the Spanish Fort of San Felipe, housing the Regional Museum where we can see
an exhibition of the Maya culture. We move towards Sian Kaan, biosphere reserve
included in the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites in 1987. Overnight at Rancho
Sol Caribe, located in the heart of Sian Kaan. A place to relax and unwind.
Day 6: SIAN KAAN/TULUM
After breakfast, we start our day early to explore Sian Kaan. It is the name
of a biosphere reserve covering 1.3 million acres of land along the central
coast of the state. Biosphere reserves are a new concept. The goal is to preserve
the flora, fauna, and ecosystems of an area while satisfying the needs of the
local population. In biosphere reserves, conservation is not conceived of as
prohibiting use, but rather as the rational and long term sustainable use of
the resources. A brief explanation about the biosphere reserve will be given
by an experienced Biologist. We will hike in the jungle with explanation of
the most important plants and animals of the area. We will search for seasonal
aquatic birds visiting the lagoons and rediscover an ancient Mayan temple located
in the middle of this wilderness. Free time to take some optional eco-tour:
Climb aboard an open motor boat for a trip around the lagoon. The boat motors
across the lagoon to mangrove "islands" full of nesting birds. Roseate
spoonbills, ibis and tri-colored heron are common here. Less prevalent sights
are jabiru, jaguars, deer, peccaries, manatees, and monkeys - but you could
be lucky. There is also time to snorkel and swim at nearby beaches. Our next
stop will be the little town of Tulum. Get ready for an exotic night at rustic
Cabanas Copal, away from telephones and electricity. The cabañas (cabins)
are nestled in a small clearing in the tropical forest on top of a natural terrace
which overlooks the most private beach. Enjoy a natural experience without sacrificing
some of the comforts of home. Walk along the beach, have some rest and relaxation
at the beachside bar. Overnight.
Day 7: TULUM/ CANCUN
Breakfast. We start our day with a guided tour in Tulum, a particularly impressive
site, perched as it is high on top of limestone cliffs that spill down to the
turquoise waters of the Caribbean below. Your first time in the “ walled
city” will take your breath away. Tulum represents a fusion of the elements
which make Quintana Roo a very magical place: Maya constructions, the ocean,
beaches and the traditional culture. It offers the perfect combination of total
relaxation, tranquility and seclusion. Free time to explore the area. Take time
out for a swim, you can plunge into the Caribbean straight from the beach fronting
the site. We return to Cancun. End of Mayan Encounters Expedition.

Day 2: CANCUN/CHICHEN ITZA/CENOTE IK KIL/ MERIDA
After breakfast, we start our journey to Chichen Itza. Deep within the jungles
of Mexico and Guatemala and extending into the limestone shelf of the Yucatan
peninsula lie the mysterious temples and pyramids of the Maya. Chichen Itza
has been widely studied, excavated and restored more than any of the other Mayan
cities. Yet its history is still clouded in mistery and there are many contradicting
theories and legends. Guided visit of the site and free time to explore the
area. Buffet Lunch at Hacienda Xaybe’h . Get prepared for a refreshing
swim at Cenote Ik Kil, the “Sacred Blue Cenote”, whose transparent
water keeps the secret of the baths of the Maya kings and their courtesans.
Our last stop of the day will be Merida, better known as “The White City”.
Troubadours and poets have dedicated many lines to Merida, the capital of the
State of Yucatan. Walk along the Grand Paseo Montejo, a boulevard designed as
a replica of the Champs Elysées in Paris, lined with the neoclassic-style
mansions of the original henequen barons. Merida is also a gourmet’s delight.
It mixes native Mayan cuisine with continental dining. Enjoy your delicious
dinner. Overnight.
Day 3: MERIDA/ THE YUCATAN HACIENDA ROUTE/ UXMAL
Early breakfast. Then we spend our day exploring the Hacienda route. Haciendas
were part of an economic system begun by the Spaniards in the 16th century,
similar to the feudal system of Europe. They were efficient farming and manufacturing
centers that produced meat, farm produce and other products for export. Over
time Haciendas became symbols of wealth and culture, adorned with architecture,
furnishings and art from all over the world. Our first stop will be Hacienda
Yaxcopoil, where time stands still. Roam freely through the rooms in the Main
House. You will see the large lounges and drawing rooms with high ceilings,
walls with painting stencils and original mosaico floor tiles. Don’t miss
the Mayan Museum. We continue towards Hacienda Temozon, the most palatial of
the restored haciendas. The entrance leads up stairways, past the unique dolphin-head
waterspouts, to the grand terrace. A delicious gourmet meal will be waiting
for us. Before we leave, be sure to explore the grounds and what is probably
the longest swimming pool in the Yucatan. We continue south to charming and
intimate Hacienda Ochil. Here you can watch master craftsmen teach younger artisans
to work in leather, stone, metal, wood and henequen. One of the pleasures of
Ochil is simply strolling around the grounds, enjoying the lush gardens. You
will pleasantly surprised by a half-hidden cenote. Depending on the water level,
you may be able to walk inside and see ancient Mayan handprints painted on the
cave walls. We continue to Uxmal for the light and sound show. Dinner at Club
Med Uxmal.Overnight.
Day 4: UXMAL/RUTA PUUC/CAMPECHE
Alter breakfast, we start with a guided tour of the Ruta Puuc. Puuc architecture
has several predominant features, most notably constructions with a plain lower
section and a richly decorated upper section. Carvings most commonly found include
serpents, lattice work and masks of the God of Rain, Chac. Our first stop will
be Uxmal, one of the most well known of the Maya cities, and rated by many archaeologists
as the finest. Climb the Pyramid of the Magician; the view from the top is well
worth the effort . Visit impressive Governor’s Palace, intricate Doves
Temple and the Grand Nuns Quadrangle. Free time to explore the area on your
own. Box lunch. We continue to Kabah, famous for its “Palace of Chaac
Masks”. Although only a small part of this site has been excavated, it
is home to some very interesting and unusual buildings and sculptures. Continuing
on with the route, our next stop will be Sayil, which means “ The Place
of the Ants”. This site is home to a beautiful palace that included 90
bedrooms for some 350 people. Check out the huge stellar dating from 800-1000
AD. Then we will come to Xlapak. This site is less restored and manicured so
you can see what the sites looked like when they were discovered. Notice that
many carved stones are just laying around on the ground. The next stop will
bring us to Labna, a small and intimate site, filled with exquisite and intricate
details. We depart towards Campeche, a picturesque port town founded by the
Spanish in 1540. The silence of the city is both magical and moving. Possessing
one of the best preserved historic centers in Mexico, it was declared a World
Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999. Riding through its narrow streets is like traveling
in a time machine going back four centuries. Free time to admire its colonial
architecture, enjoy its cuisine and cultural life. Overnight.
Day 5: CAMPECHE/EDZNA/MERIDA
After breakfast, trolley city tour. Our tour guide will show us the military
and colonial architecture of Campeche. We depart towards Edzna, “House
of the Grimace” in Mayan. Edzná had a longer history than most
other Mayan sites and this is chiefly because it was developed over two major
phases. It is surrounded by a complex system of canals and reservoirs, and a
square, fortress-like structure, is encompassed by a moat. We drive to Merida.
Free time to explore the city on your own. Visit the indoor market, enjoy a
cool drink at one of the outdoor cafes of the Hidalgo Park, get relaxed in a
peaceful atmosphere. Overnight.
Day 6: MERIDA/ CONKAL CONVENT AND MUSEUM/IZAMAL/VALLADOLID
Early breakfast. Then departure to Conkal, one of the oldest and most important
group of monuments and foundations of Yucatán's convent architecture.
This convent was founded in 1549 and its church was formerly dedicated to Saint
Francis of Assis. We move towards Izamal, a ruin site which has a colonial city
built over it. The small town is known as the Yellow City. The Pope chose this
city as his place of residence while in Yucatan in August 1993. Box Lunch. We
continue our journey to the charming colonial city of Valladolid, known as the
Heroic City because of the many epic events that make up its history. It is
also distinguished because of the Colonial style of its constructions. Here
you can be in direct contact with the Maya people and observe, in a natural
way, their way of live and their customs. Enjoy your free time. Overnight.
Day 7: VALLADOLID/BALANKANCHE CAVES/CANCUN
After breakfast, a guided city tour to learn more about the history of Valladolid.
On our way back to Cancun, we make a stop at Balankanche Caves. This place deserves
a visit for the beauty of its natural stone formations and for its archaeological
importance as a ceremonial site for the Maya. We will see hundreds of glittering
stalactites surrounding a huge stalagmite (resembling a ceiba tree) which stretched
from floor to ceiling in the center of the enormous vault. Return to Cancun.
